Lifetime Health Cover Loading

Explained | Konkrd

Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading is a rule designed to encourage Australians to take out private hospital cover earlier in life. If you wait until after your 31st birthday to get cover, you’ll pay extra on your premium. Konkrd breaks it down so you know what LHC is, how it works, and how to avoid paying more than you need to.

What is Lifetime Health Cover Loading?

LHC loading is a government initiative that adds a percentage to your hospital cover premium if you delay joining after the age of 30. The loading increases your costs each year you wait, up to a maximum of 70%.

How Does LHC Loading Work?

Here’s the simple version:

  • The government sets a base date: 1 July following your 31st birthday
  • If you take out hospital cover after this date, you’ll pay an extra 2% loading for every year you delayed
  • The longer you wait, the more you’ll pay – up to a maximum of 70%
  • The loading applies only to hospital cover premiums, not extras

Examples of LHC Costs

  • Sarah takes out hospital cover at 35 she pays 10% more than the base premium
  • Michael waits until 45 he pays 30% more
  • Emma signs up at 65 she pays the maximum 70% loading

How to Avoid LHC Loading
You can avoid or reduce loading if you:

  • You take out hospital cover before 1 July following your 31st birthday
  • Maintain continuous cover once you join
  • Use permitted days without cover (1,094 days in total across your lifetime)
  • Qualify for exemptions (see below)

How Long Does LHC Loading Last?

The good news: LHC loading doesn’t last forever.

  • After holding hospital cover continuously for 10 years, the Lifetime Health Cover loading is removed.
  • Once the Lifetime Health Cover loading is removed, it won’t return as long as you keep your hospital cover for life.
  • If you drop your hospital cover, the Lifetime Health Cover loading will return-and when you rejoin, it starts again at 2%.

Common Exemptions from LHC

You may not have to pay loading if you:

  • Were overseas on your base date (special rules apply for returning residents)
  • Hold a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card
  • Qualify for special exemptions (e.g. migrants with later permanent residency dates)
  • You were born on or before 1 July 1934.

Why LHC Matters

LHC loading can make health cover much more expensive if you delay. For example, waiting until 50 could mean paying 40% more on your hospital premiums every year for a decade. Knowing how it works can save you thousands over your lifetime.
